(i)

Squaring again, 4(x2 – 16) = x2 + 2x + 1

⇒  4x2 – 64 – x2 – 2x – 1 = 0

⇒  3x2 – 2x – 65 = 0

⇒ 3x2 – 15x + 13x – 65 = 0

⇒ 3x(x – 5) + 13(x – 5) = 0

⇒ (x – 5) + (3x + 13) = 0

⇒ x – 5 = 0  or 3x + 13 = 0

⇒ x = 5  or   x = - 13/3

x = 5

Hence, the solutions are 4, 5.
